Think Tank or Work Tank?

I called it right on the European Economic Crisis. I called it right on Germany.  I called it right on China.  I will now call it on China again.

China: Gratte-ciel

China is poised for a new round of capital investment.

China does not have a housing bubble--China has a housing inventory.

"The best way for Guinea to control its iron ore and to profit from its iron ore is to partner with China."  The Quotations of Slim Fairview.

  • China needs iron ore for steel.
  • China has Economic ties to South America
  • China is building a canal in Nicaragua
  • China has contracted to run ports in Greece
  • China has contracts with Greek ship builders
  • China can build a steel plant in Guinea
  • China can build a deep water port in Guinea.

  • Guinea has ultra rich iron ore which can be refined cost effectively.
  • Guinea needs a deep water port
  • Guinea can ship straight to the canal in Nicaragua then on to China

China can and will partner with Guinea.

  • China is building high speed trains to bring people to the housing inventory.
  • China will be building roads.
  • China will have no trouble doubling the capacity of its trucks to
  • Double the size of the containers they can carry to
  • Speed up the shipment of cargo

In Economic Softwar, I wrote who controls which resources is crucial to survival.

Additional Reading

At the end of many of my articles, specially the ones on management, I write, "if you find anything here to be helpful, please don't hesitate to send me a really tricked out MacPro and to tuck a few dollars into the envelope along with the thank you note."

That is a satirical comment on how American corporations waste millions of dollars driving their companies into the dirt rather than spend a few thousand on common knowledge and common sense.

However, this is different.  The global economic decline and the upsurge in competition by more and more people for fewer resources screams out:  Think Tank.  Oops! I mean, Work Tank.

If you find what I write to be helpful, please do not hesitate to provide the funding for me to establish a Work Tank.

A Work Tank is an organisation that looks to find what works using: The Empirical Method of Analysis, not to test theories.

PS.  Okay, throw in a MacPro along with the Funding.

Mr. When's Chicken

Mr. When was a poor man who lived on the outskirts of a small village.  He lived in a small hut. Besides a pot to cook his food, and an ax to cut wood, his only possession was a chicken.  The chicken laid eggs and that is how Mr. When survived.

When Mr. When was younger he would say, "When my day comes....." and regal people of what he would do.  Now he is old.  Now he says, "When will my day come?"

As Mr. When grew older he was less able to take care of himself.  Soon he grew weak.  Now he is feeble.

Mr. When has a good friend, Mr. Soon.  Mr. Soon is a prominent man in the village.  Routinely, Mr. Soon goes to visit Mr. When.  When Mr. When becomes despaired, "When will my day come?" Mr. Soon says, "Soon, my friend.  Soon."

One day, Mr. When, too feeble to work, resolved to kill and cook to the chicken to regain his strength.  However, as he is headed to the coop, Mr. Soon sees him and stops him to ask what he is doing.  Mr. When tells him.

Mr. Soon advises against this.  He inspires Mr. When with the tale of The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs.  Mr. When feels better and resolves not to kill the chicken.

A few days later, Mr. Soon is passing Mr. When's hut when he sees a crowd.  He goes to find out what has happened.  The people tell him that Mr. When has died.  The doctor will be out soon.  When the doctor comes out, he informs the villagers that Mr. When has died of starvation; but that he did leave a note.  He read the note:

To my good friend, Mr. Soon.  Thank you for your constant support, your guidance, and your visits.  I have little, but to thank you, I leave you my cookpot, my ax, and my chicken.

When the people ask for an explanation, Mr. Soon tells them what had transpired.  The villagers were incensed.  They went to Mr. Soon's home and pillaged and looted.  All he had left was a cookpot, an ax, and a chicken.

It was not long after that Mr. Soon died.

The saddest part of this tale is that Mr. Soon died never understanding why he was the most reviled man in the village.

Marketing 1959

Think you're a marketing guru?

In 1959 leggings were not a fashion statement.  They were, for the purposes of this discussion, what a 6 year old boy wore to school in winter when his Mom was feeling specially cold.

As with galoshes--a medieval form of footwear designed to torture enemies by forcing their children to wear them to school, leggings were an embarrassment.  They were a scarlet letter, a hair shirt, the wrong team jersey worn on Superbowl Monday.

Then, one day, they were no longer leggings, courtesy of one of my friends.  They were now ski-pants--and they were cool.

Flash forward: 1964. Penny Loafers. Ugh!  (I had a pair of Beatles Boots!)  They, too, were a target of derision.  Then, again, courtesy of my buddy who showed up for school in a pair of penny loafers.  They were no longer penny loafers.  They were now Weejuns.  And they were cool.

When and where did I learn marketing?  In 1959.  In the first grade.  That is when and where I learned how to spin.

Grade one, my buddy is running for Class President.  I must have been one of the cool kids.  I was one of two people chosen to count the ballots.  It was a close race.  One vote decided the outcome.

The last vote was written on a piece of blue paper.  It was for my buddy.  The vote was cast by a mutual friend.  The friend who was responsible for our friend being elected.  How so?

As he informed us that he knew that the blue piece of paper would be the last one chosen.  Spinmeister.

And you consider yourself a marketing guru because you studied marketing?

I've been studying marketing since your parents were forced to bear the shame of wearing  galoshes to school.
